How to Turn Off the "Error Report" Box on Windows XP
I'm sure this has happened to all of us that own a Window's computer. You are happily sitting at your desk, working on whatever you have to do. Your day is going beautiful, and your computer is actually acting normal. And then it happens. Something freezes, locks up, and you must "End Program." How does this happen? Why did this happen? Well, before you can answer that question you have another little box pop up on your screen. This grey box is the Error Reporting dialogue box, which asks you whether or not you want to send the error report to Microsoft. Usually whenever a program crashes, the last thing you want to do is sit around and wait for the error report to send. I know, for me, this is a very annoying occurance that happens. I understand the need for it, however, if I want to send an error report, I will be prompted by myself. So what do you do when you want to turn off the Error Reporting dialogue box?
Well, surprisingly turning the error box off is a very simple process that takes a few minutes at most. But why would you want to turn off the "error" box. The main reason many people decide to disable this feature, is because they simply don't see the need to send the error report. They just want to get back to what they were doing before the "error" began. For people who feel like this, there is a way to stop that little box from popping up. Just follow the instructions below, and you will then be able to disable the "error" box on your computer.
1. The first thing you will want to do is click on the START menu and then go to CONTROL PANEL.
2. After doing this, locate the PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE link, and then click on it.
3. Once you have done this, you will then want to find the SYSTEM link, which will be located under the Control Panel icon.
4. Now make your way to the System Properties window and then click the ADVANCED button/tab.
5. After you have gone to the ADVANCED section, you will notice that at the bottom of the window there is a button called ERROR REPORTING, once you have found this button, click it.
6. Now that you are in the Error Reporting section, you can now disable the reporting box. Find the DISABLE ERROR REPORTING radio button and click on it. After doing so, click the OK button and then you are good to go.
7. You will now click okay to get out of the System Properties window and then close out of the Performance and Maintenance/Control Panel window.
Now that you have disabled the error reporting dialogue box, you won't be prompted to send an error report anymore. However, if you still want to be notified when critical errors happen to your computer, there is an extra checkbox you can click. This way you get the best of both worlds. You won't be notified of a "normal error" but only whenever a crucial error occurs on your computer. I find this is the best, and safest, way to keep a check on your computers errors.
