How can I recover jpeg files after upgrade from windows

Me to Windows 2000 crashed during installation? I have an older Sony desktop that had Win Me on it. After dealing with so much unstability, I decided to upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro. I backed up a bunch of jpegs (pictures of my son from birth to 3-4 years old) onto CD using Easy CD Creator (that came bundled with the PC) and then began the upgrade process.Somewhere during the installation, the PC crashed. I re-ran the install disk 5 or 6 times, and finally got to the point where it will boot (still wrought with errors). However, I cannot access any of the jpegs that were on the driver. And of course, for some reason, I cannot open any of the backed up jpegs on any PC! I've tried using Stompsoft Recovery software to no avail (it finds 1000s of jpeg files, but none of them are viewable)I really don't know what happens during the conversion of FAT to NTSF. I've been told by some PC gurus that the jpegs data should still be there. Anyone know a good way to find and recover these irreplaceable jpegs? Thanks!
