Chao Legions PC-Rip


Capcom has once again ported a lackluster console game to the PC. While we may never know why the company chooses not to port its better games, we do know that Chaos Legion is still a repetitive and bland hack-and-slash game on the PC, just as it was on the PlayStation 2.

In the game, you play as a knight named Sieg Warheit, who is tasked with stopping a man named Victor Delacroix from collecting powerful magical artifacts. The two men and these artifacts are linked by past events; Sieg killed Delacroix's lover, and now Delacroix is hoping to use these magical artifacts to bring his beloved back to life, even if it means causing wanton destruction along the way. The game uses cutscenes between missions to advance the plot, but the silly dialogue and convoluted scene direction make following the story more difficult than it needs to be. The cutscenes include decent but unremarkable voice acting, much like the music and other sound in the game.

"X-Blades" offers action-packed enjoyment in fantastic Hack-and-Slash style. Bard choosing the Marching skill can beat the drum so ferociously that under his command and leadership even the so far untrained armies gain new levels and become upgraded!
To upgrade the army using the Marching skill you must have built, in any of your cities, the upgraded dwelling of this creature. Then you can click on the army in your hero screen and look for the upgrade arrows.

When choosing the Chant of Battle, the Hero learns to play a battle song, which increases the courage of his troops before the battle.
Random number of stacks get attack and defense bonuses in the upcoming battle.



Having this advanced skill, Hero learns to wield his war machines in a deadly way!
Such Hero can now have MORE war machines of the same kind in his army and therefore deal multiple damage!
You can also trade the war machines among the friendly heroes. Exact number of your war machines can be seen by the right click on the artefact.

Hero with Ambush advanced skill can choose to surprise the enemy and set the ambush trap leaving the enemy completly surrounded on the battle field (similar way like in the dwarven treasury)



During his many fights in the arena, your Hero learns how to see the vital spots on the enemy bodies and how to lead a blow to strike those vital points.
Now every stack under the command of such hero has a 5% chance to make a critical hit strike, which kills the entire stack at once!


The fights you'd won in the Arena had increased your agility and dexterity in such a way that you now can wield *TWO* swords at the same time, one in your right hand and one in your shield (left) hand!



Hero choosing this skill learns to tend the creatures in his army in such a skillful way that under his command they increase their numbers every week by 10%!



Vitality increases the hit points of all units under Hero's command in the battle by 20%.




Academics advanced skill gives you a chance to learn your fellow heroes all the secondary skills that you know.
To start the Academics teaching process, you must meet the hero, who you want to teach.



Hero with Spying advanced skill starts to build his own intelligence service, which can give him detailed information on all enemy heroes!
Your intelligence can give you reports on hero's advanced skills, hero's servant status, hero's secondary skills, creatures and artefacts equipped.

Strategy advanced skill is a highly sofisticated battle skill, which gives commanders a new ability to increase the attack and defense of all units which are close (diameter of 3 hexes) to their battle standard!
Increase points are calculated from the commander's own ATT / DEF. (As a bonus, Strategy also negates Tactics secondary skill!)


Your royal clothing and noble behaviour persuades the creatures to come to your services more willingly and for less charge than usual.
Price of the hired creatures in the towns and dwellings on the map is 20% less when Hero has a Nobility advanced skill.


As a rightful king you should have a young sire to tend your needs and help you on your travels with the mundane things.
Squire also helps his Master in the battle, adding his primary skill points (without artefact bonuses!) to the points of his Master. Squire hero must be on level 5 maximum, if he gains more levels, he thinks himself to be too experienced to be just a squire and leaves his Master.

Your mastery of the war strategy and leadership of an army are on such a level now that you can easily command more battalions during the battle effectively.
Command advanced skill gives you opportunity to add additional regiment to your army, having now up to *8* such regiments (i.e. stacks) under your direct command!

MAGIC HEROES SKILLS


Hero having Adventure Spells advanced skill is now able to cast all the basic Adventure Spells, which are offered in his spell book.
To access the Adventure Spells spell book right-click on the spell book icon on the Adventure screen.



Hero having Telekinesis advanced skill is now able to collect resources from afar and visit most of the buildings in his thoughts, leaving the body on the same place.
To perform the Telekinesis action, right-click on the desired object.


Hero having Magic Merchant advanced skill is now able to trade mithril for ordinary resources and also trade spell points for resources. You'll never run short of mithril or spell points anymore!
To trade in mithril Magic Merchant Hero must be in town and click on to the marketplace. (Merchant is only interested only in 1 trade a week!)

Hero having Word of Command advanced skill will sing the incantantions before the start of every battle and the power of his voice will be such that it temporalily downgrades part of the enemy army! (1 - 2 stacks depending on pure chance)

Alchemy advanced skill gives your Hero a chance to invent the spells he likes most in the towns mageguilds.
Alchemy also learns your Hero to better use of the collected resources increasing thus their total value by 2. To start the spell inventing process click on the mageguild when hero with alchemy is visiting.



When choosing the Magic Pouch, your Adept gains the Magic Pouch to his inventory.
Inside the Magic Pouch you can put up to THREE different artefacts and maintain their primary skills bonuses the same way as if they were equipped! (all other artefact bonuses will be lost!)


Mage having the Combat spells speciality can cast spells affecting the tides of battle even before the battle begins! You can choose from 4 beneficial spells and 4 damaging spells.
To cast those spells you must have them written in your spell book.

Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom


Each entry in Impressions’ city-building series has been an incremental upgrade to the previous one. The series improved dramatically with Pharaoh, the first game to leave the Roman confines of the Caesar games. The series improved even more significantly with Zeus, which added more-creative mission goals and downplayed the military element, which had previously been a problem with the series because of the cumbersome combat interface. Zeus had a few of its own problems, but it introduced so many great ideas and features to the series that it seemed like a promise of even greater things to come. Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom breaks this promise. Instead of improving on Zeus, Emperor plays it safe by returning to the earlier games in the series. Developed not by Impressions but by BreakAway Games (whose previous work includes the Cleopatra expansion for Pharaoh), Emperor is much like Pharaoh, with a few of Zeus’ additions thrown in for good measure. Though it includes some improvements of its own, it also brings back a few frustrating issues from earlier games. And some of these problems–such as the combat interface and the aimless wandering of your workers–aren’t as easily overlooked as they once were.

Rice is one of the new agricultural commodities. It’s not a major criticism to say that Emperor plays much like its predecessors. Impressions’ city-building games have always been formulaic, but it’s a solid and addictive formula. With the last three city-building games, most of the major changes have been cosmetic. The gods, buildings, and commodities available are specific to the setting, but the basic gameplay remains almost identical. You lay down residential areas, set up trade with other cities, provide food and commodities for your residents, and occasionally fight to defend your city or send your troops out to conquer another.

Emperor follows this formula to the letter, though instead of being in ancient Rome, Egypt, or Greece, you are now in ancient China. With Zeus, the setting lent itself to more-exciting mission goals: You would often need to attract mythological figures and send them out on quests, or build huge sanctuaries to the gods who would then bestow considerable bonuses to your city. The mission goals in Emperor return to the basic quantitative goals of Caesar III and Pharaoh. You’ll be required to produce a certain quantity of a commodity in a year, save up an amount of money, conquer a number of cities, or reach a target population. Occasionally you will be required to build a monument, but these monuments are goals in and of themselves and don’t bestow any benefit to your city apart from satisfying an objective.

After choosing one of 12 deviant cars, you drive it from your raised chase-car perspective through mostly uninspired arenas, picking up health, napalm, and other assorted weapons of mass destruction in hopes of being the last one standing. Racing around the area, you try to pick off the other contestants before they take you out of the game. As a nice little sadistic sidelight: Scattered throughout are the poorly rendered unprotected groupie, skateboarder, and other assorted out-of-place pedestrians that you can run over (well you don't really run them over, it's more like you push them for a few hundred feet before they disappear from the screen).

ROCKMAN X4 - PC RIP


Some video games the masses can enjoy, and some video games cater to the hard-core fanatic of a specific genre. Flight sims are a good example, as are most golf games. What many don't realize, though, is that even a genre as innocuous as the simple platform shooter has a hard-core fan base - a league of players that can run faster, shoot longer, and generally destroy any side scroller in one sitting. These blister-thumbed few need something better, faster, harder. Mega Man X4 was created for them.

First, you must be a fan of the motif to even understand this game. By motif, I'm talking about anime and all the Speed Racer-esque backgrounds, bizarre character names, and recycled sound effects that go along with it. In addition to the game's general aesthetics, all the cinematic scenes are 100 percent anime, right down to the shamefully bad voice acting. The first scene introduces you, by means of a frantic music video, to all the games major characters. From there, you are thrust into the action of the game's first two-stage level that serves as a teaser to the rest of the story.

Through much in-game exposition, we learn that General and Colonel (great names!), under instruction from the evil Sigma, have incited Repliforce, an army of reploids formerly allied with our heroes, the Maverick Hunters, to riot. Following Sigma's plans to destroy the human race that created them, they have demolished a Maverick Hunter base and promise to continue the destruction until their final weapon is complete, and the earth is vaporized, or something like that. It is, of course, up to Mega Man X and his faithful partner, Zero, to foil their plans and save the earth from destruction.

Inventive it is not, but this latest installment in the extensive Mega Man series does sport enhanced graphics, a new soundtrack, gigantic bosses, and one other notable enhancement - this is the first of the series that lets you play as X or Zero. Capcom is hyping this feature as providing "two separate adventures." While it does increase the game's replay value, it's decidedly not two separate adventures. The game follows one scenario with a few differences, such as sidekick and dialogue, depending on the character you choose - much like Sonic and Knuckles or Resident Evil.

The real difference between characters lies in how the game plays. Play as X, and the gameplay is very similar to the other Mega Man X games. You run around and shoot things, collecting armor from Dr. Light and new weapons from your fallen adversaries. If you choose Zero, the story doesn't change much, but you must alter the tactics used to fight attackers and overcome obstacles. Zero is armed with a Z-Saber instead of X's Arm Cannon making it necessary to fight up close. No armor is provided for Zero, and instead of looting his enemies for new weapons, Zero learns a new fighting tactic when he slays an opponent. This introduces an element of head-to-head-fighter gameplay into the mix and makes it necessary for you to learn button combos to pull off each move. Needless to say, playing as Zero increases the difficulty level a bit.

No matter which character is used, though, this is one tough game to beat. Challenging gameplay, as in all previous Mega Man titles, is the key here. Each level, with few exceptions, is designed to include little secrets and interesting terrain. Each new weapon or fighting move learned requires practice to master. The various baddies are quite illusive and hard to eliminate. The real challenge waits at the end of the level - another Mega Man trademark. Providing formidable bosses has always been Capcom's strong suit. The true side-scroller fan is separated from the rest. It is a real test of will to sit in front of a TV and blast away at the same massive robotic bad guy for hours straight. Some find it tedious to the point of delirium; others love the challenge. I found it tedious. I tend to enjoy a few more puzzles in the levels themselves and a tad less adversity at the end of them. Fortunately, MM X4 is executed just well enough to make the monotony bearable.

The control layout is intuitive, and the reaction time is unsurpassed. The soundtrack, while incredibly typical, is filled with the Japanese video-game synth-pop hooks we all hate to love, and the cutscene dialogue, though pitiful, is a definite improvement over Mega Man 8. The graphics, unlike previous Mega Man titles, take full advantage of the PlayStation's 16-bit color palette and alpha-channel transparency, lending the game a decidedly 32-bit look. The multiple-parallax backgrounds are flawlessly rendered and cause no discernable slowdown in the frame rate. A few more 3D effects would have been nice, but the decision to stick with a true 2D environment is bold, if somewhat outmoded. Aesthetically, Mega Man X4 is a sizeable improvement over its predecessors, but you must remember that it's only a side scroller. Seventy or 80 similar games are out there that are just as good. If you're looking for something new, look elsewhere. If you're one of those weirdo platformer fans, though, Mega Man X4 is what you crave.

MEGAMAN X5 - PC RIP



Fans of the classic 2D games will no doubt find much to love in X5, while those who can't get into the aging conventions and mechanics probably won't care a great deal for it.

The two men and these artifacts are linked by past events; Sieg killed Delacroix's lover, and now Delacroix is hoping to use these magical artifacts to bring his beloved back to life, even if it means causing wanton destruction along the way. The game uses cutscenes between missions to advance the plot, but the silly dialogue and convoluted scene direction make following the story more difficult than it needs to be. The cutscenes include decent but unremarkable voice acting, much like the music and other sound in the game.
