How do I get rid of the 'Other' section on my iPod? -

My iPod is a 4GB black nano, the older version, and when I plug it into my compouter iTunes opens and shows me the window with the bar describing how full it is. The 'other' section, or hte orange section makes up 1.04 GB of my 4GB machine. I know that that is way too much, does anyone know how to get rid of it?
