The Richard Pryor Story (2007)

Richard Pryor was one of the funniest men who ever walked this planet. Pryor came from humble, impoverished beginnings which saw him grow up in his grandmother's brothel and the documentary follows his rise as one of the greatest stand up comedians of all time. Also it will look at his troubled private life as he wrestled with drug abuse.
The show was filmed in front of a live audience in California in 1979, and the atmosphere that envelops the viewer is more akin to a rock concert than stuffy comedy club.

Pryor lets rip when untied by the constraints of the censors, and falls straight into hilarious diatribes with a free-wheeling whirlwind of "scatalogical observations" (c/o The Radio Times) that draw on everything from his dodgy private life, from his hard family ("Go stand in the middle of the street while I start the car") to his very well (self) publicised run-ins with the boys in blue. Fans of Bill Hicks apply here. You'll find a laid back, potty mouthed comic splitting everyone's sides which allows him to flirt effortlessly from filthy jokes to razor sharp satire of race and sex in US culture.
