Indian Cobra:
The Indian Cobra or Spectacled Cobra(Naja naja) is a species of venomous snake native to the Indian subcontinent. Like other cobras, the Indian cobra is famous for its threat display involving raising the front part of its body and spreading its hood. An average cobra is about 1 meter in length and rarely as long as 2 meters (6 feet). The spectacle pattern on the hood is very variable as also the ground colour of the snake. Indian cobras are oviparous and lay their eggs between the months of April and July. Females lay from 12 to 30 eggs in a underground nest and the eggs hatch 48 to 69 days later. Newborns cobras measure between 8 and 12 inches (20-30 cm). Newly hatched cobras have fully functional glands. King Cobra: The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the largest of the venomous land snakes, growing up to 18.5 ft (5.7 m) in length. However, as they are generally slender, King Cobras usually do not exceed 44 lb (20 kg). Its venom is a neurotoxin, capable of killing a human. The King Cobra is peculiar in that it feeds almost exclusively on other snakes, and is even known to attack larger snakes, including pythons. In spite of the King Cobra's fearsome reputation, however, it is generally a shy and reclusive animal, avoiding confrontation with people as much as possible. The King Cobra lives in much of mainland South East Asia and throughout the dense highland forests. The snake has a preference for living in areas dotted with lakes and streams, and is an excellent swimmer. The King Cobra is said to be the only snake which makes nests for its eggs. It is widely worshipped in India as nagaraja ("king of snake"). The female usually lays 18-50 eggs. King Cobras mate annually. It take about 70-77 days for the hatchlings to emerge from their eggs. Its average life span is about 20 years. When biting its prey, venom is forced through the snake's half-inch-long (8-10 mm) fangs and into the wound. Although the venom is less toxic than many other venomous snakes, including the Indian Cobra, a King Cobra is capable of injecting more venom than any other snake except the gaboon viper. In fact, a King Cobra can deliver enough venom to kill a full-grown Asian Elephant in 3 hours. King Cobra venom attacks the victim's nervous system and quickly induces severe pain, blurred vision, vertigo, drowsiness, and paralysis. In the minutes following, cardiovascular collapse occurs, and the victim falls into a coma. Death soon follows due to respiratory failure. There are two types of antivenin made specifically to treat King Cobra envenomations. The Red Cross in Thailand manufactures one, and the Central Research Institute in India manufactures another. Both are made in small quantities, and are not widely available.

Was over looking at OS's and somehow got to this post. I hate snakes.
I live in an area that is replete with many, many different types of snakes and I see them regularly. I figure it's fate way of trying to get me to learn to live with them. I try by staying away from them and letting them do what they do - whatever that is...as long as they aren't doing it to me. I never knew that there were two distinct types of Cobra. I always figured it was only the King Cobra. I had heard that they were shy (as most snakes do try to avoid humans), but also had heard that people living in Asia or India wherever the Cobra's home is had a high rate of bites because of the way people live. Their homes and stuff aren't like in America. Snakes hide easier around them and they get bitten just by doing everyday chores not knowing they are threatening the snakes...accidents. Don't think I would like to live in places like that. Wish I could live in a place with no snakes actually. |
