Why CD / DVDs are not playable after burning?

Someone wants to empty his PC, it repeatedly damages his CD/DVDs after burning. He is using Nero for burning and his DVD Drive is Sony. All CD/DVDs got damaged, maybe 1-2 in 10 got out okay. Someone suggested that his CD/DVD ROM's optic is damaged and needs to be replaced, therefor it ruins all his CD/DVDs. Can someone guide us what should we do? Might it be a problem with windows cos his windows is WINDOWS XP without any service pack!!!! (I know you must've been shocked!!!)PLEASE HELP with a good answer, I would be very much appreciated.Good Luck
