Do you have antivirus running? thats usually the biggest slowdown, also the sidebar, how many gadgets are you running? the more the slower the start up. Other than that, as far as the services go, i would hide the microsoft ones, then go through whatever is left, referencing google if necessary to see what they are, then make the decision on what you deem as necessary.
